STELVIO PASS

The Stelvio Pass passostelvio (Stilfserjoch in German, 2758 m above sea level), the highest pass in Europe, is located in the Rhaetian Alps and separates the Valtellina from Trentino Alto Adige, and is connected with the Switzerland by the Yoke of Santa Maria Step Umbrail. The Stelvio Pass is included in the Stelvio National Park stelviopark and can be reached by road state Stelvio with 36 hairpin bends on the Lombardy side and 48 on the side of South Tyrol. Stelvio as well as being an important road link in summer, is also a known mountain summer ski area, a legendary climb for cyclists and motorcyclists and place of walks and excursions. The realization of the Stelvio road was made at the beginning of 1800 on the orders of Emperor Francis I of Austria, the project was entrusted to Carlo Donegani and in 1825 the road was opened; until 1915 the street was also passable in winter, but now it’s only open during the summer from May to November. During World War II, the Stelvio was a place of great military confrontations between the Italian army and the Austrian army.

• In the years ’50 it was opened a summer ski school on the glacier and were built shelters and hotels, from where a cable car and then skilifts, allows you to get to the slopes of the glacier skiing. The Stelvio glacier, surrounded by the peaks of Orltes-Cevedale Group, is the largest summer skiing center in the Alps, with more than 20 km. ski runs, with an altitude ranging from 2758 m. at the Pass up to 3450 m. of Monte Cristallo.
• The Stelvio is not just “summer ski”, but also “cycling” and “motorcycle”, every year are organized competitions with cycling and mountain bike, along the hairpin bends of the spectacular mountain road, meetings for motorcyclists, but especially the Stelvio it is known since 1953 for the “Tour of Italy”.
• The Stelvio, inserted in the Stelvio National Park, is also a place for hikes and walks in unspoilt nature, where you can see the golden eagle which is the symbol of the Stelvio National Park and Gypetus barbatus the largest bird of the Alps central and of the Valtellina.
