The history of Bormio and of Alta Valtellina, dates back to 1000, later than other areas, because of the presence of the imposing glacial moraine, that shows the presence of the glacier in valley. The first people seem to be of German origin, Ligurian and Etruscan and it seems very likely that the first settlements have settled just in Bormio, protected from cold winds by the natural barrier of Mount Reit.

Over the years, Bormio has had various dominations, from the ancient Romans, then came the Goths and Lombards, Coira, Como, the Grisons with the agreement of the Grey Leagues, the Spanish, the French with the Cisalpine Republic, the Kingdom of Italy, Austrians with Lombardo-Veneto, until the unification of Italy for which Bormio and the Alta Valtellina begin to be part of the Italian State.

The activity of Bormio was mainly devoted to the trade, to the mining, to the agriculture and to the rearing of livestock; then with the construction of the Stelvio Pass Road in 1825 by the Austrians, Bormio begins the first hints of tourism with the revaluation of the spa of Bagni Vecchi and the construction of the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi.
